some days last longer than others

turn the gentle spiral
searching out and staring at me

and that day, he asked me if i remembered her. his ex-girlfriend. the one he thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with. the ex-girlfriend we all know as the one who broke his heart.

things like that catch you off-guard. and you try to find the right words to say even as you know that nothing you say would ever make things right. and i answered haltingly as if the near past was ancient history and i was struggling hard to recall. but i remembered, all too clearly. i don't know why he asked and he wouldn't say why either. i wondered what went through his mind when he thought about her and thought about what i said about remembering her. more importantly, i wondered what was going on in his heart.

he asked of my age. and wondered what i see for myself in 10 years time. what would i be doing? where would i be? who would i be with? happily married with kids? you know, with life, it is really hard to tell. that day, that man who spoke to me, spoke with a strong sense of longing that he hoped no one would detect. laughter filled his days, jokes his minutes and smiles his seconds. and in that quiet moment, he took stock of his life and found himself wanting differently. that day, as that man spoke to me, he was still smiling.

sometimes you meet people who make you wished that the last wish you made upon a shooting star was a wish made specially for them.

i hope you have a good life.
